ENGAGE

Thank you for caring about Amidon-Bowen Elementary School.  You can be a powerful voice for all children and an advocate for public education by supporting Amidon-Bowen Elementary School. There are many ways you and the community can support us.  Please see below for different avenues to engage in this work and positively impact Amidon-Bowen!

Volunteer

There are many wonderful things that the PTA is involved with in our school and community.  None of these events would be possible without help from all of us.  We most urgently need help supporting specific school events: SIGN UP HERE. For general volunteer opportunities, fill out the Volunteer Form.

Adults who volunteer at more than one school event or who would like to chaperone school field trips must go through the DCPS fingerprinting process. You must (a) fill out this DCPS online application, (b) get tested for TB or have proof of a negative TB test within the past year, and (c) get fingerprinted by DCPS. We have arranged for DCPS to visit the school to fingerprint parents who have received their negative TB results by Saturday, November 18th from 9 – 11 AM. To participate in this opportunity, sign up here.

Please consider helping from home or at the school, during the day or after hours.  There are many different ways in which you can help.  You don’t have to give up all of your spare time, but if you could volunteer just a little of your time it would make a world of difference to the School and the PTA.

Join the PTA

The PTA meets the first Tuesday of each month at 6 PM in the school’s library. Food and childcare are provided. We have a number of PTA committees and welcome additional ideas and support from Amidon-Bowen parents and community members.

Participate on the PreK Parent Committee

For all PreK parents, consider attending a monthly PreK Parent Committee meeting held in the parent resource center.

Attend an LSAT Meeting

The Local School Advisory Team (LSAT) meets on the third Thursday of the month at 5 PM in the conference room. Anyone can attend the LSAT meetings. The LSAT is a group of elected and appointed members that exists for every DCPS school. The team consists of parents, teachers, non-instructional school staff, and a community member. The purpose is to provide the principal with suggestions and advice about ways to achieve the school’s academic goals and to help raise general concerns or suggestions of the school community.

Attend an Open House

Come meet our principal, observe classes, meet current parents, and tour the school. You may also check out our school during one of our winter play dates for both current and prospective families. Open houses and winter play dates for the 2017-18 school year will take place on:

  • December 6: Open house from 9 – 10:30 AM
  • January 24: Open house from 9 – 10:30 AM
  • February 3: Winter play date from 10:30 AM – 12:30 PM
  • March 3: Winter play date from 10:30 AM – 12:30 PM
  • April 4: Open house from 9 – 10:30 AM

Serve on the STEM Steering Committee

We are excited to have a growing group of engaged staff and parents sharing their ideas and vision to further integrate STEM into all areas of the curricula. If you’re interested in getting involved, please feel free to attend one of the meetings held each month after school in Mr. Ewing’s classroom. Email Amidon-Bowen for more information.
